Conditions that affect the Cornea

- Keratitis which is inflammation of the cornea due to bacterial or fungal infections
- Keratoconus in which the cornea gradually becomes thinner, distorted and cone-shaped.
If experiencing any symptoms of corneal conditions, one should visit an ophthalmologist right away, comply with the treatment and attend the follow-up appointments, this will result in a better and faster recovery.
If the patient has symptoms of keratitis, a small sample is taken from the cornea, it is then examined in the laboratory to detect the microorganism causing the infection. The treatment is then decided accordingly.
In some cases where vision is impaired due to permanent loss of corneal transparency, corneal transplant is an effective option. It involves removal of the damaged cornea and transplantation of a new healthy cornea from a donor.
