Understanding Cataracts Causes and Risk Factors
While aging is the most common cause, cataracts can also develop earlier in life due to several factors. These include diabetes mellitus, long-term use of corticosteroids, frequent UV exposure, smoking, alcohol use, eye trauma, and poor nutrition. The condition develops gradually as lens proteins break down and clump together, reducing lens clarity and distorting vision.

Cataract Surgery
Restoring Vision with Precision
Surgical removal of the cloudy lens is the only effective treatment for cataracts. At Almosawi Eye Specialist Center, we offer two types of cataract surgery, carefully chosen based on your individual eye condition.
01
Phacoemulsification (Phaco Surgery)
Phacoemulsification is the most advanced and widely performed cataract procedure. It uses ultrasound technology to break the cloudy lens into tiny fragments, which are then gently removed through a small incision. An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted in place of the natural lens. The procedure is quick, performed under local anesthesia, and typically requires no stitches. Most patients return to daily activities within 24–48 hours.
02
Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)
In complex or advanced cases—such as mature or very dense cataracts, or in patients who are not suitable for phaco due to other eye conditions—ECCE may be required. This method involves removing the lens in one piece through a slightly larger incision, followed by implantation of a synthetic lens. While recovery can take slightly longer than phaco, ECCE remains a safe and effective surgical technique.
- Our cataract surgeons are highly trained and experienced in both phacoemulsification and ECCE, ensuring that every patient receives the most appropriate and safest treatment for their condition.
Choosing the Right Intraocular Lens (IOL)
After the cataract is removed, a clear artificial lens is implanted to restore vision. We offer a range of intraocular lenses to suit different needs and lifestyles
Monofocal lenses
Bifocal lenses
Multifocal lenses
Toric lenses
EDOF lenses
- Your surgeon will guide you in selecting the lens that best matches your visual goals, lifestyle, and eye health.
