CHALAZION

When the small oil glands in the eyelid get blocked a small swelling with redness appears. With time it becomes a firm lump that can stay for weeks. This lump is called a chalazion.

A stye is a similar condition to a chalazion. However, a stye results from an infection, is painful and lasts for a shorter period.

Chalazion can be treated effectively at home. All you need is a wet, warm and clean cloth. The cloth is used to apply pressure over the chalazion for 15 minutes, making sure that the cloth remains hot throughout the process and is reheated when necessary. This should be done 4 times daily until the lump disappears.

Most of the time, home treatment described above is successful. However, if the lump is big, persistent or recurrent. A simple procedure under local anaesthesia can be performed in the office to remove the lump. It involves incising the lump and draining its contents.
